An accurate fuel gauge, according to aviation safety standards and rapidly available for the helicopter prototype of Marenco Swiss Helicopter, these where the basic requirements. Starting with a functional prototype, a capacitive sensor solution has been developed which does not only indicate the height of the fuel in the tank, but also compensates for the form of the tank and which works independent of the temperature and exact fuel type. As an additional feature the sensor delivers also the fuel mass in kg.
During development functional safety processes of Solcept where used, leading to a cost-effective qualification of the sensor. By Solcept assuming the overall responsibility for the subsystem, including intensive collaboration on the mechanical solution, a solution could be found that is optimum for the helicopter and easily integrated with the other avionics.
The hardware for the capacitive fuel measurement has bee developed under consideration of functional safety according DO-254/ ED-80, environment acc. DO-160G/ ED-14G and considering explosion protection according ATEX (ATmosphère EXplosible). The software on the microcontroller was programmed for functional safety according DO-178C/ ED-12C using C according MISRA-C coding rules.
