The drivers of the "rollenden Landstrasse" stay in a train carriage while their trucks roll through Switzerland on the railway. These carriages and the complete trains are scheduled and controlled from a control center. Our customer was responsible for the development of the complete system. The Internet of Things part had to be developed anew, the back-end including the user interface existed for road vehicles and had to be adapted as efficient and fast as possible for railway operations.
We supported the customer to generate the specifications and then mainly undertook the adaptations and enhancements for railway, so the customer did not need to use own resources. By taking over the project management for our part and iterative delivery the system could be put into operation quickly.
The most important competency in this project was that the project team has familiarized itself fast with the domain knowledge and the existing technology. By this and through the agile, iterative delivery of new versions the operation could be optimized in an efficient manner. For programming, web and database technologies were used, sometimes our embedded knowledge was also required. On the lowest layer the Internet of Things cannot exist without networks from mobile to field buses and TCP/ IP.
