Not everyone gains their knowledge from books. I think that if a book is available, it is the best source of information.
But there are a huge number of books out there. Which ones should you read? Which book really has an impact?
Since I am often asked about this, here is a list of my recommendations:
Topic | Book | Comments |
Project management (for software-intensive projects) | Tom DeMarco, Tim Lister: "Peopleware: Productive Projects and Teams" | The classic for software projects, quick read, approx. 200 pages |
Risk management in projects | Tom DeMarco, Tim Lister: "Waltzing with Bears" | Another thin book on how to manage risks with little effort |
Leadership: Empowerment | Easy to read, almost a novel | |
Leadership: Language | L. David Marquet: "Leadership is Language: The Hidden Power of What You Say and What You Don't" | The structure (“plays”) takes some getting used to for non-Americans, the content is very good and practical |
Strategy | Henry Mintzberg, Bruce W. Ahlstrand: "Strategy Safari: Your complete guide through the wilds of strategic management" | All strategy “schools” are categorized and commented on with humor |
